First dates can be harrowing and exciting. What do I wear? Should I be late? Do we meet for coffee or dinner? Who pays?

If you want to meet new people, first dates are necessary.

A woman is looking for honesty, respect, a life of your own, integrity, friends, satisfaction in work, ambition, confidence without arrogance, intelligence, conversation, humour, fun, decisiveness, and balance.

DO

• Show her you’ve made an effort.
• Give her an indication of how she should dress.
• Invest in contemporary clothing.
• Get your hair cut if needed.
• Focus on the now and do not talk about exes.
• Ask interesting questions about her.
• Be on time.
• Preplan where you will take her.
• Open doors.
• Compliment her.
• Choose a busy, vibrant, interesting venue.
• Pay for the first date.

DO NOT

• Be late.
• Tell her everything; keep some mystery.
• Get hideously drunk.
• Talk or text on your phone unless it’s an emergency.
• Be rude to waiting staff.
• Swear.
• Give the impression that you are a party boy.
• Grab her after your first date.

After a good first date, send a text the next day saying how much you enjoyed the evening.
